Our highly acclaimed musician, experienced entertainer, and laughter therapist Prof Ras Banamungu is the mastermind of the multi-awards-winning group Prof Ras Banamung and The Det-n-ators International. He has designed a program specifically to meet his community’s needs- LAUGHTER PERCUSSION. Through his life story, a unique art form, professional experience within the disability sector, and trauma-informed studies, Ras has curated an inspiring experience of happiness that caters to all ages, abilities, and locations.

NDIS Laughter Percussion Sessions at YMCA – Every Tuesday with Professor Ras Banamungu
Join us every Tuesday from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM at YMCA Kalgoorlie for our unique Laughter Percussion Therapy Sessions, led by Professor Ras Banamungu, internationally recognized therapist, author, and founder of the Laughter Percussion Academy.
These sessions are part of our NDIS-approved innovative community participation program, designed to uplift the mental, emotional, and social wellbeing of people living with disability through the power of rhythm, joy, and connection.

Are you looking forward to becoming a professional percussionist? Cajon means box (Caja) or drawer (Cajon) in Spanish. Legend has it that 18thCentury enslaved Africans in Peru created the first Cajon.
Marimba is a long wooden keyboard Percussion instrument with a large resonator of African and Latin American origin. It is regionally termed African Mbira.
The Xylophone is made of bits of wood that are tuned to different notes. You have to play it with sticks, or beaters, to hit the wooden bars, sometimes as many as six at a time.
The mbira of the Zezuru group of the Shona people of Zimbabwe consists of 22 to 28 metal keys mounted on a Gwariva (hardwood soundboard) made from the Mubvamaropa tree.
The Percussion family traditionally played this goblet-shaped drum. This instrument is, to date, the most popular African drum to be played around the world.

Learning to play tapping sticks can be great fun! It is by far the most popular African instrument to be played outside of Africa.
